The Government of the Balearic Islands has presented a new project in the municipality of Esporles aimed at developing supervised housing for elderly people with dependency needs. This initiative forms part of the Socio-Health Infrastructure Plan 2026-2030, a strategic program designed to strengthen the public care network and expand services for people requiring long-term support.

The project was introduced by the Minister of Families, Social Welfare and Dependency Care, Sandra Fernández, during a presentation held in Esporles. The event was attended by the Mayor of Esporles, Josep Maria Ferrà, the President of the Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS), Guillermo Sánchez, and the Manager of the Consortium of Socio-Health and Care Resources of the Balearic Islands, Alejandro Mora.

The initiative includes the renovation and adaptation of the former convent building in the municipality, which will be converted into a supervised residential facility with a maximum capacity of ten places. The project has an estimated investment of 200,000 euros and aims to create a local care resource designed for elderly individuals who require ongoing support but are still able to maintain a degree of independence within a community environment.

The future supervised housing facility will operate in coordination with the existing day care centre in Esporles, allowing residents to benefit from professional monitoring and specialised care services. This integrated approach seeks to ensure that residents receive appropriate support while remaining connected to the social environment of their municipality.

The supervised housing model encourages older adults to remain within their familiar surroundings, preserving their social relationships and community ties. By providing services locally, the initiative helps prevent the need for relocation to other municipalities and strengthens proximity-based care within the dependency support system.

During the presentation, the Minister emphasised the importance of developing care resources tailored to the needs of individual municipalities. According to the regional government, enabling elderly residents to remain in their communities when they require assistance represents a key step in strengthening the public social services network and providing more effective support for families.

The Esporles supervised housing facility is part of the Balearic Government’s Socio-Health Infrastructure Plan, included within the broader strategic program Illes en Transformació. Across the Balearic Islands, the plan foresees the development of 18 new socio-health facilities, the creation of 693 care places, and a total investment of 82.4 million euros, aimed at expanding and modernising public dependency care services.
