The supercomputer of the Balearic Islands Supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence Centre now has an official name: Talaia. The winning proposal was submitted by students from class 6º B of CEIP Tramuntana in Palma as part of the school competition “Name the Supercomputer of the Balearic Islands”.

The selected name refers to the historic watchtowers located across the islands, structures traditionally positioned in elevated locations to observe the horizon and anticipate potential events. This symbolism reflects the purpose of the supercomputer itself: to process large volumes of data, generate strategic knowledge and support the antic

Integration of complex scenarios in scientific and technological fields.

Talaia, the winning name for the supercomputer of the Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands Supercomputing and Artificial Intelligence Centre is a strategic initiative promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands through the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation, in collaboration with the University of the Balearic Islands. The facility is located at ParcBit within the Balearic Research Complex, reinforcing this environment as a key hub for technological development and research activity.

Talaia represents a high-performance computing infrastructure designed to support advanced scientific and technological projects. Its processing capacity is equivalent to the simultaneous operation of approximately 1,300 to 1,700 laptop computers. Through its parallel computing architecture, the system can execute millions of operations at the same time, enabling research in areas such as biomedicine, artificial intelligence, climate and weather modelling, energy systems and large-scale data analysis.

The development of this center is part of the regional government’s strategy to strengthen innovation and diversify the economic model of the Balearic Islands. The initiative forms part of the broader investment plan in innovation and digital transformation scheduled until 2030, which includes a total allocation of 250 million euros aimed at reinforcing research, scientific infrastructure and support for innovative companies.

With the implementation of Talaia, the Balearic Islands strengthen their position within the national supercomputing ecosystem and enhance their capacity to attract scientific talent, competitive research projects and investment in high-value technological sectors. The project reflects the regional government’s commitment to an economic transformation driven by knowledge, advanced technology and sustainable development.
