Spain will strengthen its naval presence in the eastern Mediterranean through the deployment of the frigate “Cristóbal Colón” (F-105), one of the most technologically advanced vessels of the Spanish Navy. The ship will operate alongside the naval group led by the French aircraft carrier “Charles de Gaulle”, together with ships from the Greek navy, as part of international security and cooperation activities in the region.

The frigate joined the naval group on March 3 to participate in escort operations, maritime protection and advanced naval training exercises. After completing activities in the Baltic Sea, the task force has begun its transit toward the Mediterranean and is expected to reach waters near Crete around March 10, before continuing its operational deployment toward Cyprus.

During the group’s transit, the replenishment ship “Cantabria” will briefly put to sea to provide fuel and logistical assistance while the vessels cross the Gulf of Cádiz. This support mission will ensure the operational continuity and endurance of the naval formation during its journey to the eastern Mediterranean.

The “Cristóbal Colón” frigate, regarded as the most advanced ship in the Spanish fleet, will primarily perform air defence and protection duties within the naval group. Its presence will reinforce regional security capabilities and complement existing defensive systems deployed in the area, including Patriot missile batteries stationed in Turkey.

In addition to its military responsibilities, the vessel will remain ready to assist in potential civilian evacuation operations if the evolving regional situation requires it. Through this deployment, Spain reaffirms its commitment to collective security efforts and to the protection of the European Union’s strategic interests, particularly along its eastern frontier.
