The Consell de Mallorca has launched, for the first time, a subsidy program aimed at supporting the preservation of the island’s traditional festive heritage. The initiative allocates a total of €105,000 to municipal councils across Mallorca to assist with the maintenance and upkeep of cultural elements such as giants, big-head figures, demons and other traditional festive characters that are an integral part of local celebrations.
Through this new funding program, each municipality can receive up to €5,000 to cover eligible expenses incurred between July 1, 2024, and June 30, 2025. The measure seeks to strengthen the role of local councils in safeguarding festive traditions and to ensure that these symbolic cultural elements continue to play a central role in community celebrations throughout the island.

The Consell de Mallorca grants, for the first time, a €105,000 subsidy for the maintenance of giants and big-head figures in Mallorca
Rafel Bosch, Councillor for Finance, Innovation and Public Administration, highlighted that this initiative represents a significant step in protecting Mallorca’s popular cultural heritage. According to Bosch, the program reinforces the commitment of the island council to municipal culture and to local administrations, which play a key role in organising and promoting traditional festivities in their communities.
The purpose of the call for grants is to preserve and promote festive traditions associated with giants, big-head figures, demons and fire beasts that typically participate in parades, processions and other public celebrations during municipal festivals. These figures represent a longstanding cultural tradition and form part of the collective identity of many towns across Mallorca.
Beyond the preservation of physical elements, the program also aims to stimulate local cultural policies and support associations and community groups involved in organising and maintaining festive traditions. By doing so, the initiative contributes to strengthening cultural participation and ensuring that these traditions continue to be shared with residents and future generations.
Eligible expenses under the program include repair and conservation work on festive figures, cleaning and maintenance of costumes and accessories, transportation services, musical accompaniment during events, technical services and pyrotechnic elements used in traditional celebrations organised by demon groups.
The municipalities benefiting from this funding include Alaró, Alcúdia, Algaida, Andratx, Artà, Binissalem, Búger, Calvià, Campanet, Campos, Consell, Inca, Lloret de Vistalegre, Lloseta, Mancor de la Vall, Maria de la Salut, Marratxí, Muro, Puigpunyent, Sant Llorenç des Cardassar, Santa Eugènia, Santa Margalida, Santa Maria del Camí, Santanyí, Selva, Sencelles and Sineu.
