The president of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens, presided over the institutional ceremony marking the six-hundredth anniversary of the contract that initiated the construction of the Lonja of Palma, one of the most iconic historical and artistic landmarks in the Balearic Islands. The event brought together public authorities and cultural representatives to commemorate the architectural and historical importance of this emblematic building.

During her address, the president emphasised the significance of the agreement signed in 1426 between the College of Merchants and the architect Guillem Sagrera. This contract led to the creation of a structure that would become one of the finest examples of Mediterranean civil Gothic architecture. Originally built as the headquarters of the merchants’ guild, the Lonja symbolised the commercial vitality and maritime strength that characterised the Kingdom of Mallorca during that period.

Prohens highlighted the artistic legacy of Guillem Sagrera, widely regarded as the most important medieval architect from the Balearic Islands. His architectural vision produced a building distinguished by its elegance and structural originality, qualities that continue to captivate visitors six centuries after its construction began.

The president also recalled that the regional government reopened the Lonja nearly two and a half years ago intending to return this historic site to the public and transform it into a cultural hub dedicated to artistic expression and contemporary creativity.

Since its reopening, the building has attracted more than one million visitors and has hosted a wide range of cultural events and exhibitions. Internationally recognised artists have presented their work in the space, while the venue has also welcomed artistic initiatives spanning visual arts, literature, dance and classical music.

As part of the commemorative program, attendees were able to enjoy a lecture exploring six centuries of history and artistic heritage associated with the Lonja of Palma. The ceremony concluded with a performance by the Mallorca Chamber Orchestra conducted by Bernat Quetglas. The musical program included contemporary compositions alongside works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, offering a tribute to the cultural atmosphere of the era in which the Lonja was originally constructed.

Through this anniversary celebration, the Lonja of Palma reinforces its status as one of the most significant cultural and historical symbols of the Balearic Islands, linking the city’s rich past with its vibrant present and its international cultural projection.
