Mallorca’s interurban transport system continues to strengthen its sustainable mobility strategy with the introduction of a rapid-charging system for electric buses operating on line 123 between Santa Ponça and Cas Català. This new infrastructure enhances the efficiency of the public transport service connecting several coastal areas within the municipality of Calvià.

The Director General of Mobility, Lorena del Valle, visited the new facilities together with the Mayor of Calvià, Juan Antonio Amengual, the Deputy Mayor for the Environment, Juan Thomás, and the Managing Director of the Consorci de Transports de Mallorca, Luisa Serra. During the visit, officials presented the operation of the rapid-charging pantographs that supply electricity to the hybrid electric buses serving this route.

Line 123 links multiple coastal districts, including Nova Santa Ponça, El Toro, Son Ferrer, Sa Porrassa, Magaluf, Palmanova, Son Caliu, Costa d’en Blanes – Portals Nous, Portals Nous, Bendinat and Ses Illetes, providing an essential connection between residential and tourist areas along the Calvià coastline.

The charging systems have been installed at both ends of the route to allow efficient energy supply for the three buses currently operating on the line, with two additional vehicles scheduled to join the service at the end of March. During the demonstration as part of the institutional visit, one of the buses completed its recharge in approximately seven minutes and then began its route in electric propulsion mode.

The installation of this infrastructure required adaptation works in the surrounding area, representing an investment of 148,188 euros for the preparation of the facilities. The operating company, Moventis, financed the acquisition of the pantograph equipment and managed the technical procedures necessary to bring the system into service.

The TIB bus network currently includes a fleet of 18 electric-propulsion vehicles, consisting of nine fully electric buses and nine hybrid electric units. In addition, the system operates 216 buses powered by compressed natural gas, helping to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other pollutants.

With these initiatives, Mallorca’s interurban transport network strengthens its position among the most environmentally sustainable public transport systems in Europe. The continued implementation of cleaner technologies reinforces the commitment to a public mobility model that is efficient, accessible and environmentally responsible, offering a reliable alternative to private vehicle use.
