The University Hospital Son Llàtzer hosted the 1st Human Reproduction Conference for the Promotion of Fertility in the Balearic Islands, a scientific meeting that brought together healthcare professionals from multiple disciplines to examine the factors influencing fertility and to advance preventive approaches to infertility from a public health perspective.
The initiative was promoted by Dr Rafael Trinchant, clinical embryologist at the hospital’s Reproduction Unit, together with Dr. Martí Mascaró, head of the same unit. The objective of the conference was to create a forum for scientific discussion and healthcare collaboration focused on fertility promotion and infertility prevention within the current demographic and social context.
Son Llàtzer hosts a scientific conference to promote fertility and prevent infertility in the Balearic Islands
The opening session included the participation of Raúl Lara, Director of Healthcare Services of the Balearic Islands Health Service, and Javier Agüera, Medical Director of University Hospital Son Llàtzer. Both highlighted the importance of strengthening initiatives that address reproductive health as a key element of public health policy.
Throughout the conference, experts in primary care, reproductive biology, gynaecology, psychology and public health presented analyses and perspectives on the determinants of fertility. The discussions explored biological, social and lifestyle factors affecting reproductive capacity, preventive strategies to reduce infertility risks and the growing importance of reproductive health education.
During the event, the Consensus on Birth Rate and Reproductive Health in Spain was also introduced. This strategic framework emphasises the need to place reproductive health at the centre of healthcare and social policies, particularly in light of the ongoing decline in birth rates and the increasing prevalence of fertility-related challenges.
The conference concluded with a roundtable discussion involving healthcare professionals representing different institutions. Participants examined current challenges in fertility care and proposed potential policy directions and strategic actions aimed at developing a regional roadmap to support fertility promotion and infertility prevention across the Balearic Islands.
Beyond the scientific presentations, the meeting served as a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge exchange among professionals working in reproductive health. In a demographic environment marked by delayed motherhood and shifting birth trends, initiatives of this nature contribute to advancing research, prevention strategies and public awareness regarding reproductive health.
