The Government of the Balearic Islands has begun implementing the Xarmet project in Ibiza by distributing meteorological stations to several educational centres across the island. This pilot initiative aims to promote scientific education and enhance students’ understanding of climate and environmental observation by utilising real-time data.

The equipment has been delivered to five participating schools in Ibiza: IES Santa Maria d’Eivissa, CEIP Sant Jordi, IES Quartó de Portmany, IES Balàfia, and IES Quartó del Rei. The programme forms part of a broader educational and technological initiative designed to encourage environmental awareness and data analysis within the school environment.

Alongside the installation of the equipment, the project has included a training session for teachers from the participating centres. The session took place at CentreBit Eivissa and focused on explaining how the meteorological stations operate, how the collected information can be processed, and how the data can be integrated into classroom learning activities.

The stations will allow schools to collect real-time weather data, including temperature, humidity, rainfall and wind speed. These datasets can be incorporated into educational activities linked to subjects such as natural sciences, geography and technology, providing students with practical opportunities to work with environmental data and scientific observation.

The Xarmet initiative seeks to stimulate interest in science and meteorology among students, encouraging them to engage directly with environmental monitoring and data analysis while developing scientific and technological skills.

Beyond its educational role, the programme will also contribute to expanding the meteorological observation network across the region while strengthening collaboration between public institutions and educational centres in the development of innovative educational projects.

Towards a smart territory

The deployment of these stations forms part of a wider strategy aimed at building a Smart Territory, a model in which data is used to better understand the environment and support more informed public decision-making with a direct impact on daily life.

The project is coordinated within a knowledge framework dedicated to the development of an intelligent territorial ecosystem in the Balearic Islands and involves collaboration between educational, scientific and academic institutions. The initiative plans the gradual installation of up to 100 meteorological stations in schools throughout the archipelago, combining technological innovation with scientific learning and environmental observation.
