The Consell de Mallorca has launched the 2026 Mallorca Jove Awards, a cultural initiative aimed at encouraging literary and artistic creativity among secondary and high school students across the island. The competition seeks to promote reading, strengthen language skills and support creative expression among young people, coinciding with the celebration of Sant Jordi, a traditional date linked to literature and culture.

The programme is open to students enrolled in educational centres in Mallorca and includes several categories dedicated to literature and artistic design adapted to different educational stages. The competition offers a total prize fund of €6,000, which will be distributed among the winning works in the narrative, poetry and bookmark design categories.

Within the narrative category, two levels have been established. The Bearn category is intended for students in the third and fourth years of compulsory secondary education, while the Joana E. category is aimed at first- and second-year high school students. In the poetry category, the awards include the Balanguera category for students in the third and fourth years of secondary education and the Pi de Formentor category for high school students.

In each literary category, the winning entry will receive a tablet with a protective case and digital stylus, while the finalist will be awarded an e-reader device. In addition, the prize winners will receive a complete collection of the Rondalles Mallorquines by Jordi des Racó, highlighting one of the most important works of Mallorca’s literary heritage.

The competition also incorporates cultural references connected to the island’s literary tradition. Narrative submissions must include at least one of several specific words associated with the language and imagery found in the Mallorcan folk tales known as rondalles, paying tribute to this important narrative tradition.

In the poetry category, participants must incorporate one of several selected words in homage to Joan Alcover, marking the centenary of the Mallorcan poet’s death. The competition also commemorates the hundredth anniversary of the musical adaptation of the poem La Balanguera by Amadeu Vives, a work that later became the official anthem of Mallorca.

The awards programme also includes the Mallorca Jove Bookmark Design Prize, aimed at students in the first and second years of secondary education. In this category, the jury will select three winning designs that will receive sets of cultural products inspired by Mallorcan folk tales, valued at €200, €150 and €100 respectively. The designs must be created using manual techniques.

Submissions will be accepted until April 1, and entries must be sent through the participating educational centres. Literary works must be submitted in digital format, while bookmark designs must be delivered physically to the relevant linguistic service of the Consell de Mallorca.

The Mallorca Jove Awards 2026 will be presented during a public ceremony at the Consell de Mallorca once the jury has announced its final decision.
