The president of the Council of Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés, attended the event and highlighted the importance of this musical gathering within the island’s cultural calendar. He emphasised the strong connection between music and the traditions of Mallorcan Holy Week, as well as the role of musical groups in preserving and transmitting this cultural heritage.
Galmés also expressed his appreciation for the commitment of the participating musicians, conductors and collaborating organisations involved in the event. In particular, he acknowledged the contribution of the Association of Brotherhoods of Palma and its president, Bernat Riera, for their collaboration in organising the concert.
The event was also attended by the vice-president of the Council of Mallorca and councillor for Culture and Heritage, Antònia Roca, who highlighted the significance of music as a fundamental element of Holy Week celebrations on the island and as a living expression of Mallorca’s cultural identity.
The bands meeting forms part of the Holy Week cultural programme organised by the Council of Mallorca, which also includes concerts, exhibitions and traditional events across several municipalities on the island.
Among the scheduled activities are concerts in churches throughout the Part Forana, featuring local musical ensembles. After the opening performance by Agrupación Musical Essència, the programme continues on 18 March in Santa Maria del Camí with Ntra. Sra. de la Esperanza y la Paz, on 21 March in Sant Llorenç de Selva with Banda Santa Mónica, and on 28 March in Fornalutx with Agrupación Musical Ntro. Padre Jesús de la Humildad.
The programme also features the Easter Concert: Donizetti’s Messa di Requiem, scheduled for 1 April at the Teatre Principal, conducted by Xisco Bonnín and performed by the Teatre Principal Choir, the Orquestra Acadèmia 1830 and several soloists.
In addition, La Misericòrdia Cultural Centre hosts the Second Exhibition of Brotherhoods of Mallorca, presenting representative garments and banners from brotherhoods across Palma and other municipalities, as well as the Fourth Photographic Exhibition of Holy Week in Palma and musical ensembles, showcasing images by fifteen photographers offering contemporary perspectives on the celebrations.
The programme is complemented by several traditional Holy Week events, including the representation of the Via Crucis in Alaró and the participation of the Joc de Ministrils in two of the island’s most emblematic processions: the Sant Crist de la Sang procession in Palma and the Holy Burial procession in Sineu, highlighting the deep connection between tradition, music and cultural heritage in Mallorca.
