The Government of the Balearic Islands promotes the visibility of traditional craftsmanship in fashion through its participation in Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid, one of the leading national fashion events. Through the Baleart Fashion Crafts initiative, the region will showcase its heritage in a dedicated exhibition space from March 20 to 22, focusing on the contemporary reinterpretation of traditional island footwear.
The exhibition highlights iconic rural footwear, including porqueres, avarques, and various types of espardenyes, including canvas models. This approach emphasises both the cultural significance of these ancestral techniques and their evolution into modern designs capable of reaching new audiences and adapting to current fashion trends.

The project brings together artisan workshops and specialised brands representing the different islands, offering a comprehensive view of the archipelago’s craftsmanship. The exhibition combines traditional pieces with innovative reinterpretations that preserve their original identity while aligning with contemporary fashion aesthetics.
Live demonstrations of the production process are also included, providing insight into the craftsmanship and technical expertise behind these creations. This institutional initiative aims to enhance the recognition of Balearic craftsmanship, support its international projection, and strengthen its position within the global fashion industry.
