The Government of the Balearic Islands showcases a proposal at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Madrid focused on the contemporary reinterpretation of traditional footwear. Under the concept “Slow Mediterranean Shoes,” the initiative highlights the intersection of craftsmanship, cultural heritage, and modern design, aiming to strengthen the sector’s international visibility and market positioning.

Taking place from March 20 to 22, the exhibition features iconic models such as Mallorca’s porqueres, Menorca’s avarques, Ibiza’s espardenyes, and Formentera’s canvas espardenyes. These designs have endured over time due to their functional simplicity, structural efficiency, and adaptability, maintaining their original identity while evolving to meet current demands. The showcase combines authentic traditional pieces with innovative reinterpretations developed by contemporary designers.

Organized by the regional Ministry of Business, Self-Employment and Energy in collaboration with island councils, the initiative seeks to highlight the work of artisans and companies that have preserved this sector. It also serves as a strategic platform to support international expansion, creating new business opportunities and increasing global exposure for Balearic footwear.

The exhibition space brings together established brands and designers who reinterpret historical models while preserving their defining characteristics. Live demonstrations of traditional shoemaking techniques are also included, emphasizing the cultural and technical value of these products.

Participation in this major fashion event aligns with a broader strategy to position Balearic craftsmanship as a benchmark for quality, sustainability, and design within the global fashion industry.
