The Spanish Government has initiated proceedings to revoke the designation of Sagunto’s Holy Week as a Festival of National Tourist Interest, a status originally granted in 2004. This action follows the opening of an administrative review to assess compliance with the criteria required for maintaining this distinction.

The decision comes after an internal vote within one of the participating brotherhoods, in which the inclusion of women in certain religious activities was rejected. This situation has led to formal complaints and prompted authorities to examine whether the event continues to meet the requirement of broad public participation.

Current regulations establish that such recognitions must reflect strong social roots and inclusive participation. In this context, the review will assess whether existing restrictions undermine these principles, particularly in cases where part of the population is excluded.

At the same time, equality-related actions have been initiated to evaluate potential discriminatory practices. Complaints received have been forwarded to relevant authorities and the organization involved, with the aim of reviewing access criteria and ensuring compliance with equality and non-discrimination standards.

The legal framework requires equal access and participation for women and men in entities open to the public. Internal regulations must align with these principles and cannot justify discriminatory practices.

The ongoing process will determine whether the event still meets the conditions necessary to retain its official status, within a broader commitment to upholding fundamental rights and promoting equality in social and cultural activities.
