The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, in cooperation with the environmental organisation GOB, has launched a new edition of the volunteer monitoring program focused on protecting sensitive areas for threatened bird species in the Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant. The initiative aims to strengthen the protection of birds of prey during the breeding season while encouraging citizen participation in the conservation of this ecologically significant natural area in the Balearic Islands.
The program continues the work initiated in 2025 and reinforces a collaborative framework involving public administration, environmental organisations, and volunteers. During the first edition, nearly twenty volunteers took part in the initiative, contributing to more than ninety-six monitoring shifts throughout the breeding season. These activities were coordinated with environmental agents and park staff, increasing field presence during a particularly sensitive period for wildlife.

Promote a new edition of volunteer monitoring in sensitive areas for threatened birds in the Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant
The Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant is considered one of the most important locations for observing birds of prey in the Balearic Islands. Within this protected area, it is possible to observe three of the four vulture species present in Europe: the griffon vulture, the black vulture and the Egyptian vulture, with the latter two species nesting within the park boundaries. The area is also home to other notable raptors such as the booted eagle, the red kite and the osprey, making the park a strategic site for avifauna monitoring.
In addition to surveillance and visitor awareness activities, the volunteer program also contributes to the monitoring of bird populations. During the previous season, more than two hundred bird observations and monitoring records were collected through field notes made during volunteer monitoring shifts. These records provide valuable information that supports the ongoing study and conservation of raptor species and other birds inhabiting the park.
Anna Torres, Director General for Natural Environment and Forest Management, emphasised that the program highlights the value of collaboration between public institutions, environmental organisations, and the wider community in protecting particularly sensitive species. According to Torres, the presence of volunteers in the territory strengthens surveillance efforts while also raising awareness among visitors about the importance of respecting protected areas during the breeding season.
The Parc Natural de la Península de Llevant plays a key role in the conservation of birds of prey in the Balearic Islands. Citizen participation initiatives such as this volunteer program contribute to safeguarding sensitive habitats and ensuring the calm conditions required for emblematic species to complete their reproductive cycle.
Authorities also remind the public that the breeding and nesting period for most bird species is currently underway, making it a particularly sensitive time for wildlife. Respecting regulations and environmental signage in protected areas is therefore essential to avoid disturbances that could compromise the reproductive success of these species.
