The new public tender for school canteen services in the Balearic Islands introduces a model focused on prioritising local and organic food products, aiming to enhance nutritional quality in educational centres while supporting the primary sector. Covering the academic years 2026/2027, 2027/2028, and 2028/2029, this contract establishes minimum requirements that emphasise food origin and sustainability.

The tender specifications require that at least 10% of the menu ingredients come from local sources and another 10% from organic production. Additional scoring is awarded to proposals that increase these percentages to at least 15%, encouraging a stronger integration of locally sourced and environmentally sustainable products.

This measure represents a significant shift in public procurement practices, aligning institutional policies with the promotion of local economies and responsible food systems. It also contributes to improving dietary standards in schools by incorporating social and environmental criteria into service delivery.

The contract will provide services to 62 public schools across the islands, including 31 in Mallorca, 3 in Menorca, and 28 in Ibiza. The total budget exceeds €9.2 million, with an initial duration of three years and the possibility of a two-year extension.

Nutritional improvements are a key component of the new framework. Daily servings of fresh fruit are mandated, along with increased monthly frequencies of legumes and fish, reinforcing adherence to Mediterranean dietary principles. At the same time, red meat consumption is limited, processed meats are eliminated, and whole grains are prioritized.

This comprehensive approach strengthens the role of school canteens as educational environments, fostering healthy eating habits from an early age while ensuring a high-quality, sustainable service adapted to the needs of students and families.
