Menorca has initiated the process to update its strategic plan for the prevention and management of non-hazardous waste by launching a tender for the drafting of a new planning document. This framework will define policies and actions for waste management on the island over the next six years, adapting to evolving environmental and regulatory requirements.

The updated plan will address the management of household and similar waste streams, including paper, packaging, glass, organic waste, bulky items, and used oils. Its objective is to improve prevention, treatment, and recovery systems while ensuring the appropriate development of infrastructure to support efficient waste management.

The revision is necessary as the current plan, approved in 2020, will reach the end of its validity in 2026. The new document will incorporate updated regulatory standards related to circular economy principles and sustainability, as well as align with broader territorial planning and the island’s commitment as a biosphere reserve.

The tendered contract has a budget of over €129,000 and a maximum execution period of 14 months. The work will be carried out in several phases, including data collection, public participation, technical and environmental documentation, and final approval procedures.

Key strategic areas include reducing reliance on landfill disposal, with a target of limiting waste deposition to 10% by 2030, and evaluating alternative treatment solutions. The plan will also assess the adaptation of existing facilities, such as mechanical-biological treatment plants and composting units, and consider the development of new infrastructure to enhance system efficiency.

In addition, improvements to the network of recycling centers and the creation of spaces dedicated to reuse and material exchange will be explored, promoting a circular economy approach.

This initiative represents a step forward in building a more sustainable waste management model, prioritizing prevention, reuse, and recycling while reducing environmental impact and responding to the island’s specific needs.
