Pius XII School in Palma has been selected to represent the Balearic Islands at the national summit of the Climate Detectives educational program, a European initiative focused on studying climate change through scientific and technological tools. This recognition highlights the quality of the students’ work and the growing importance of science education in schools.

The selected project, titled “Does it rain less in Mallorca?”, examines changes in rainfall patterns on the island and their impact on water availability. Developed by 4th-year secondary students, the research is based on real data from meteorological services, environmental sources and satellite-based earth observation systems.

Using advanced geospatial analysis tools, the students evaluated key indicators such as soil moisture and surface water presence, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of drought conditions. This methodology provided a detailed perspective on environmental changes observed over recent decades.

The findings reveal a decline in rainfall, increased frequency of drought periods and greater variability in reservoir levels across Mallorca. The study also highlights related risks, including higher wildfire probability, biodiversity loss and rising costs associated with water resources.

In addition to data analysis, the project proposes practical solutions such as promoting water conservation, improving infrastructure to prevent losses, regulating consumption in high-demand sectors and raising public awareness about sustainable resource use. This applied approach enhances the educational impact by linking scientific research with real-world challenges.

Participation in the national summit, to be held in Murcia, will allow the team to present their work alongside other schools and potentially advance to the European level. This achievement underscores the role of Balearic educational institutions in fostering scientific skills, encouraging the use of real data and preparing students to address environmental challenges.
