The Balearic School Police Program is expanding beyond its region following its presentation in the Canary Islands, where authorities are preparing its implementation as a reference model in preventive policies and student protection. The initiative has been introduced through two information sessions held in Tenerife and Gran Canaria, targeting education leaders, institutional representatives, and local law enforcement bodies.
During these sessions, the Director General for Emergencies and Interior, Pablo Gárriz, together with the program coordinator, Rafel Covas, outlined the structure, development, and outcomes of a model with nearly twenty years of experience in the Balearic Islands.
The initiative has attracted significant interest in the Canary Islands, where it is being adapted under the name “Tutor Officer.” This step follows months of institutional coordination and technical exchange aimed at replicating a proven approach to improving school coexistence and safeguarding minors.

Balearic School Police Program presented in the Canary Islands as a pioneering model for implementation
The sessions provided a detailed overview of the program’s origins, operational framework, and current implementation, emphasizing its preventive focus and its role within educational environments. The Balearic model stands out at national level due to its regional scope, unlike similar initiatives in other parts of the country, which are typically limited to local administrations.
In the Canary Islands, the program has been presented to school management teams, municipal authorities, local police forces, and sports organizations, with the aim of supporting its gradual deployment. The initiative seeks to strengthen child protection, enhance school coexistence, and improve coordination between educational institutions and law enforcement.
Currently, the program is widely established in the Balearic Islands, with dozens of municipalities involved and over one hundred specialized officers. Promoted by the Instituto de Seguridad Pública de las Illes Balears, it fosters a preventive policing model focused on mediation, guidance, and early intervention within school communities.
Since its formal establishment in 2008 at regional level, the program has continuously evolved, expanding its scope and integrating new lines of action beyond educational settings. Recent initiatives have further strengthened its social impact and adaptability to emerging challenges.
Its proven results and long-standing experience have positioned the Balearic School Police Program as a recognized success story, both regionally and beyond, contributing to safer environments and the overall well-being of children and adolescents.
