Menorca’s waste collection and management system recorded a positive performance in 2025, reinforcing the progress achieved in previous years in terms of waste separation and treatment. Annual data show a widespread increase in all recyclable fractions, alongside a reduction in non-separated waste, highlighting a shift towards a more sustainable model.

One of the key indicators is the significant growth in organic waste collection, accompanied by increases in light packaging and paper and cardboard. Glass collection remains stable with a slight rise. At the same time, residual waste has decreased, confirming improved sorting practices among residents.

Door-to-door collection systems continue to prove highly effective, with municipalities implementing this model achieving high separation rates and notable reductions in overall waste generation. These results position them as benchmarks in meeting regulatory targets for prevention, recycling and landfill reduction.

In other urban areas, the gradual rollout of this system is also delivering positive outcomes, including higher separation rates and a decrease in landfill-bound waste. In addition, waste collection at dedicated facilities and the management of bulky and construction waste have shown considerable growth.

Despite these advances, the island as a whole continues working towards fully meeting established recycling and landfill reduction targets. However, overall waste generation has significantly decreased compared to previous years, exceeding national reduction objectives.

Beyond environmental benefits, efficient waste management also provides economic returns. Revenue generated from recycling and material recovery helps reduce system costs and alleviates the financial burden on local authorities and residents.

Overall, Menorca is progressing towards a more efficient and responsible waste management model, driven by citizen engagement, improved collection systems and a strong commitment to long-term sustainability.
