The Balearic Islands Health Service and the Josep Carreras Foundation will promote new joint initiatives to strengthen the fight against leukaemia and improve healthcare for patients requiring haematopoietic progenitor transplants. The agreement, authorised by the regional government, will involve an investment of 3.697 million euros and is expected to remain in force for four years.

This partnership will help reinforce the development of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry and promote voluntary haematopoietic progenitor donation across the Balearic Islands. The initiative aims to increase the chances of finding compatible donors and improve treatment opportunities for patients diagnosed with blood-related diseases requiring stem cell transplants.

The agreement also includes collaboration with histocompatibility laboratories within the regional public health system to carry out HLA typing for potential donors. In addition, donor personal information and genetic compatibility data will be registered as part of the programme.

Son Espases University Hospital will play a key role in the project by carrying out HLA typing tests and complementary analyses required to assess compatibility among voluntary donor candidates. The reference hospital will also conduct additional examinations linked to possible donation and transplant procedures.

Through this collaboration, the Balearic Islands continue to strengthen their commitment to healthcare innovation, medical research and the promotion of programmes that contribute to saving lives through voluntary donation and improved specialised treatments for haematological diseases.
