The Balearic Islands will play a prominent role in the exhibition “In the Italian Manner. Spain and the Mediterranean Gothic (1320-1420)”, hosted at the Museo Nacional del Prado from 26 May to 20 September 2026. The exhibition will bring together more than one hundred works from Spanish and international institutions to explore the artistic influence of Italy on the Iberian kingdoms during the late Middle Ages and the development of Mediterranean Gothic art.

Among the works representing the Balearic Islands are the Book of the Kings, preserved at the Archive of the Kingdom of Mallorca, together with the Altarpiece of Saint Quitèria, attributed to Joan Loert, and the panel of The Crucifixion, attributed to Arnau Bassa and workshop, both belonging to the Museum of Mallorca. These pieces highlight the artistic and historical significance of the islands and reflect Mallorca’s important contribution to Mediterranean artistic movements during the 14th and 15th centuries.

The Balearic contribution to the exhibition also includes other valuable cultural and religious works such as the Saint Clara altarpiece from the Museum of Sacred Art of Mallorca; the marble sculptures of the Annunciation formerly located in the main altarpiece of the Lluc sanctuary; the panel of Saint Clara Enthroned and a small crucifixion panel with Saint Francis from the Monastery of Santa Clara in Palma; as well as the Virgin of the Almudaina Palace, currently housed in the Museum of Ancient Art in Lisbon.

The exhibition will feature works from multiple artistic disciplines, including painting, sculpture, goldsmithing, illuminated manuscripts, drawings, silk fabrics and embroidery, creating a comprehensive cultural journey through the transformation of artistic expression in the Iberian territories under Italian influence. Mallorca’s Italogothic painting tradition will occupy a particularly significant place within the exhibition narrative.

The official opening ceremony will take place this evening at the Museo Nacional del Prado with the attendance of the Balearic Secretary for Culture and Sports, Pedro Vidal. The Government of the Balearic Islands has underlined the importance of promoting and showcasing the islands’ cultural heritage as a strategic tool to strengthen the Balearic Islands’ position as a leading cultural destination in the Mediterranean.
