The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment, through the Agri-Food and Fisheries Research and Training Institute, together with Aquicultura Balear, has launched a new solidarity initiative involving the donation of 3,500 sea bass to social organisations across Mallorca. The initiative aims to provide fresh, healthy and high-quality food products to families facing social and economic difficulties on the island.

The fish were raised at the Marine Research and Aquaculture Laboratory facilities located in the port of Andratx as part of a project focused on improving aquaculture production systems through advanced technology and more efficient operational methods. The initiative evaluates automated production systems designed to promote a more modern, sustainable and environmentally responsible aquaculture industry while prioritising fish welfare and production efficiency.

Distribution of the sea bass has already begun among several social organisations working to support vulnerable individuals and families throughout Mallorca. The project strengthens cooperation between public institutions, the private sector and social organisations, promoting initiatives that combine innovation, sustainability and social commitment.

Representatives from public institutions, technical teams, the fishing sector and social organisations involved in food distribution and social assistance took part in the donation event. The initiative highlights the social dimension of aquaculture and the important role of the fisheries sector in supporting local communities and sustainable development.

The programme is carried out through a collaborative agreement aimed at transforming the research and aquaculture facilities into an advanced experimental farm equipped with innovative technology to improve resource management, optimise production processes and promote more sustainable and competitive marine production models.
