A total of 93% of residents in the Balearic Islands believe that the conflict in the Middle East is having a direct impact on household finances and the cost of living across the islands. This is one of the main conclusions of the first survey carried out by the Balearic Islands Opinion Studies initiative (EOIB), promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands to assess the social and economic effects of international events on local residents.

According to the study, eight out of ten citizens report a loss of purchasing power linked to rising prices and the economic uncertainty generated by the geopolitical situation. Most respondents say they have noticed significant increases in the cost of essential supplies, fuel, food, beverages and cleaning products, directly affecting daily household spending.

The survey also reveals that between 40% and 55% of residents now face greater difficulties when it comes to saving money, enjoying leisure activities or managing monthly expenses. In addition, the conflict has generated widespread concern among citizens, both because of its economic consequences and its humanitarian impact on the civilian population.

Regarding the economy, residents appear to be more concerned about the situation of the Spanish economy overall than about the Balearic economy itself, reflecting a strong level of confidence in the resilience and stability of the islands’ economic system.

The report also highlights significant changes in mobility habits. More than 63% of respondents state that rising fuel-related costs have altered their daily transportation routines. A considerable proportion of residents now use private vehicles less frequently and increasingly rely on public transport and active mobility options.

Participants in the survey identify transportation, tourism and commerce as the sectors most vulnerable to the economic consequences of the conflict, mainly due to their dependence on fossil fuels and international market developments.

The study further indicates that global uncertainty is influencing both personal and business financial decisions. More than one third of residents admit they have postponed or cancelled planned investments, while a large majority believes the international situation could create additional challenges for economic activity and employment in the Balearic Islands.

EOIB has been created as a strategic initiative aimed at understanding public opinion on current issues affecting Balearic society. The project analyses factors such as age, gender, economic conditions and geographical areas in order to provide a comprehensive social overview of the autonomous community.

The survey was conducted among residents over the age of 18 in Palma, Part Forana, Menorca and the Pitiusas Islands, marking the beginning of a permanent public opinion monitoring system promoted by the Government of the Balearic Islands.
