The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Natural Environment has organised a technical conference in Inca to present the latest developments in school canteen procurement procedures across the Balearic Islands and to strengthen cooperation between collective catering companies and local agri-food producers. The initiative, developed in collaboration with the Alimentant el Futur Network, created a professional meeting space aimed at increasing the presence of local and organic products in school meals.

The event brought together catering providers, local producers and institutional representatives to discuss the new requirements that will govern public procurement linked to school canteens. The conference highlighted the importance of building shorter, more sustainable supply chains that are closely connected to the local territory while supporting the economic development of the Balearic primary sector.

Participants received detailed information about the regulatory changes affecting the definition of local products and their inclusion in public procurement procedures. Special emphasis was placed on the positive impact that locally sourced food can have on school nutrition, the promotion of seasonal consumption and the strengthening of links between agricultural production and educational communities.

One of the key elements of the event was a dedicated B2B networking space designed to connect producers directly with collective catering companies. The initiative facilitated business contacts, identified potential areas of cooperation and opened new opportunities for the integration of fresh, organic and locally produced food into school canteen services.

The programme also featured a specialised presentation on food safety culture in educational dining services, alongside several successful case studies showcasing cooperation between catering operators and local producers. These examples provided valuable insights into best practices and demonstrated how collaborative approaches can contribute to the development of more sustainable and resilient food systems.

In addition, attendees were informed about the new criteria included in upcoming school canteen procurement documents, which establish minimum requirements for local and organic products while introducing evaluation mechanisms that reward companies exceeding those standards. These measures form part of a broader strategy aimed at improving sustainability, food quality and support for local agricultural production within the Balearic education system.

The conference strengthened dialogue between public institutions, producers and catering providers, reinforcing a shared commitment to developing a school canteen model based on quality, sustainability, local sourcing and a strong connection to the territory.
