The Balearic Islands have emerged as the Spanish region with the strongest growth in self-employed workers during May, recording a 2.2% increase in registrations under the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA). This performance significantly exceeds the national average and highlights the Islands’ strong entrepreneurial activity and economic momentum.
Over the course of a single month, the number of self-employed professionals in the archipelago increased by 2,361, bringing the total to 108,334 registered workers. This figure represents more than 15% of all new self-employed registrations recorded across Spain during the same period, meaning that one out of every six new self-employed workers in the country started their activity in the Balearic Islands.

The positive trend coincides with the beginning of the tourism season and reflects the strength of key sectors such as hospitality, retail, services and other tourism-related activities. The capacity of the Islands to attract new business initiatives underlines the essential role entrepreneurs play in driving regional economic development.
Annual data also reveal a sustained upward trajectory. Compared with May 2025, the Balearic Islands have gained 2,197 additional self-employed workers, representing year-on-year growth of 2.1%. This places the region among the best-performing territories in Spain and demonstrates the resilience and competitiveness of its business environment.
The continued expansion of self-employment confirms the strategic importance of entrepreneurs as generators of economic activity, innovation and job creation. New business projects contribute to strengthening the productive fabric of the Islands while creating opportunities across a wide range of sectors.
