The Government of the Balearic Islands has launched a new €300,000 grant programme aimed at financing stream cleaning, restoration and maintenance projects on agricultural and livestock farms. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen the conservation of the Balearic hydrographic network while promoting a more efficient, sustainable and preventive approach to watercourse management in rural areas.
The programme reinforces cooperation between the regional administration and the primary sector, recognising the important role played by farmers and livestock producers in preserving the territory and protecting natural resources. Their direct knowledge of the land enables them to identify maintenance needs and contribute to the conservation of streams, improving hydraulic performance and reducing risks associated with extreme weather events.

The Balearic Islands promote stream cleaning on agricultural and livestock farms with €300,000 in grants
Funding will support actions designed to enhance water flow, remove obstacles from stream channels and improve drainage capacity while preventing erosion and environmental degradation. Eligible activities include vegetation clearance, waste removal, eradication of invasive species, environmental restoration projects and the reconstruction of traditional dry-stone walls.
Applications may be submitted by agricultural and livestock holdings officially registered in the relevant sector registers, provided their land is crossed by or borders a stream. Proposed projects must involve a minimum investment of €5,000 and will be assessed through a competitive selection process.
Evaluation criteria will take into account factors such as the length of the stream section to be improved, the scope of the proposed interventions and considerations related to the specific characteristics of each island. In addition, administrative procedures will be simplified through support for obtaining the environmental and hydraulic authorisations required to carry out the works.
This grant programme complements the maintenance and conservation measures already undertaken across the Balearic Islands’ hydrographic network and strengthens the involvement of land managers in protecting natural ecosystems. The initiative aims to promote a more sustainable and locally focused maintenance model that contributes to environmental preservation, supports agricultural activity and improves resilience against heavy rainfall and flooding events.
The application period will remain open until 31 July 2026, providing farmers and livestock producers with an opportunity to actively participate in the protection and improvement of the Balearic Islands’ natural waterways.
