The Balearic Islands successfully maintained their blood self-sufficiency throughout 2025, marking the seventeenth consecutive year in which the region has been able to meet hospital demand through the solidarity of its donors. More than 21,000 people contributed to a total of 36,408 blood and apheresis donations, ensuring the continuous availability of blood products across the archipelago.

During the year, the Blood and Tissue Bank organised more than 1,300 donation campaigns at 230 different locations, attracting nearly 2,800 first-time donors. Mallorca recorded the highest number of donations, Menorca once again achieved the highest donation rate per inhabitant, and Ibiza and Formentera experienced a significant increase compared with the previous year.

Innovation and accessibility remained central priorities, with the introduction of Spain’s first robot designed to promote blood and tissue donation. The institution also strengthened its outreach capacity through the acquisition of new mobile units and the addition of its first electric vehicle, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and bringing donation services closer to communities across the islands.

Educational initiatives aimed at encouraging younger generations to embrace a culture of donation also played an important role. Awareness campaigns and activities in schools and educational centres were complemented by the return of public recognition events honouring the commitment and generosity of regular donors.

The donations collected during 2025 enabled the production of more than 82,500 blood components with a high efficiency rate. Red blood cells, platelets and plasma supplied to hospitals proved essential for patients requiring surgery, cancer treatments, transplants and the management of severe medical conditions.

In addition to supporting direct clinical care, part of the donated plasma was used to manufacture essential medicines employed in the treatment of immune disorders, respiratory diseases and other complex conditions. Alongside its healthcare mission, the Blood and Tissue Bank maintained an active scientific programme and continued to promote awareness initiatives around World Blood Donor Day, highlighting the ongoing importance of blood donation throughout the year.
