The Mallorca Council has joined the commemoration of National Sign Languages Day through a series of initiatives aimed at promoting the visibility and recognition of sign languages as essential tools for communication and social inclusion. The island institution has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring equal opportunities and encouraging the full participation of deaf people in all areas of society.
As part of the celebration, a commemorative banner displaying the slogan “Sign languages for a thousand reasons” has been placed on the façade of the Council headquarters. Throughout the week, awareness actions have included the dissemination of a video in sign language designed to highlight the importance of accessible communication. The programme of activities will conclude with the illumination of the building in turquoise and the publication of an institutional message supporting the campaign.

Mallorca Council marks the National Sign Languages Day
The occasion has also provided an opportunity to recognise the work carried out in collaboration with organisations representing deaf people and to underline the importance of removing communication barriers. Advancing towards a more inclusive and accessible society remains one of the key priorities of the Council’s social welfare policies.
Through the Mallorca Institute of Social Affairs, the institution manages the only in-house sign language interpretation service operated by a public administration in the Balearic Islands. This specialised resource facilitates communication for people with hearing disabilities in healthcare, education, employment and administrative procedures.
During 2025, the service provided more than two thousand interpretation interventions and continued to ensure access to institutional information during plenary sessions, press conferences, public events and other official activities, reinforcing the Mallorca Council’s commitment to universal accessibility and social inclusion.
