The Council of Mallorca has presented the first Raïm d’Or Award to Mallorcan Paralympic athlete Joan Munar during an institutional ceremony held at Sant Carles Castle in Palma. The distinction has been created to honour individuals, organisations and groups that contribute to promoting Mallorca and preserving the cultural, heritage and landscape values closely linked to the island’s winemaking tradition.

The inaugural edition of the award has recognised Joan Munar for his outstanding sporting career and for embodying values such as perseverance, resilience and dedication. The visually impaired athlete has become one of the leading figures in adapted sport, achieving notable international success, including the bronze medal in the long jump event at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Through this award, the island institution strengthens its commitment to promoting Mallorca’s wine sector as a key element of the island’s identity and as an important economic driver. The initiative highlights the work carried out over generations by wineries and wine producers, as well as the contribution of vineyard landscapes to heritage preservation and the development of wine tourism.

Mallorcan Paralympian Joan Munar receives the first Raïm d’Or Award

The event brought together institutional representatives and members of the main quality labels of Mallorca’s wine industry, alongside producers and professionals linked to the sector. The ceremony concluded with a gastronomic showcase featuring local products and a selection of wines produced on the island.

Mallorca currently has more than 120 wineries registered under recognised quality designations and geographical indications. The Binissalem PDO includes twelve wineries and more than 500 hectares of vineyards, while the Pla i Llevant PDO also comprises twelve wineries with almost 550 hectares under cultivation. In addition, the Vi de la Terra Mallorca PGI brings together 84 wineries and more than 1,900 hectares of vineyards, reinforcing Mallorca’s position as one of the leading wine-producing regions in the Mediterranean.
