The Health Department of the Balearic Islands, through the General Directorate of Mental Health and the Health Service, has launched a dedicated programme aimed at improving emotional wellbeing and supporting the recovery of people living with mental health conditions through physical activity and sport. The initiative will be implemented in partnership with the Official College of Physical Education and Sports Professionals of the Balearic Islands under an agreement running until 2027.
The programme is supported by funding amounting to €44,390 for the years 2026 and 2027 and will provide tailored exercise activities designed to meet the specific needs of participants. It is intended primarily for individuals receiving care from community and hospital mental health services, particularly those experiencing severe mental disorders or requiring psychosocial support.

Physical activity programme launched to enhance emotional wellbeing among people with mental health conditions
Healthcare teams will be responsible for identifying and referring people who may benefit from this complementary intervention. Activities will take place in small groups and will be led by qualified professionals from the field of physical activity and sport who have specialised training in mental health, ensuring safe and coordinated support alongside existing healthcare services.
The initiative strengthens an evidence-based approach that recognises the value of exercise as a complementary therapeutic tool in the management of mental health disorders. Regular physical activity can help improve sleep quality, enhance concentration and cognitive performance, reduce stress and symptoms of anxiety and depression, and promote greater self-esteem and emotional stability.
In addition, participation in sport encourages social interaction and helps combat isolation while fostering values such as perseverance, discipline, teamwork and personal development. These elements play an important role in promoting recovery, increasing independence and supporting the social inclusion of people living with mental health conditions.
