The Island Council of Menorca has held an institutional meeting with the commanders of several naval units currently docked in the port of Maó, reinforcing cooperation and highlighting the island’s long-standing maritime heritage. The gathering provided an opportunity to underline Menorca’s historic links with the sea and the strategic importance that the port of Maó continues to hold within Mediterranean naval activity.
During the meeting, participants exchanged views on Menorca’s naval traditions, the importance of specialised training and the contribution made by different Navy units in areas related to public service and professional development. Particular attention was given to the significance of the port of Maó, widely recognised as one of the Mediterranean’s most remarkable natural harbours and a key location with a strong historical connection to naval operations.

The presence of the amphibious assault ship Galicia also highlighted the capabilities of one of the Spanish Navy’s most versatile vessels. Equipped with extensive operational autonomy, facilities for landing craft and helicopter operations, and a fully equipped hospital capable of responding to emergencies, the vessel regularly takes part in humanitarian missions and support operations both nationally and internationally, demonstrating its important role in assistance and public service.
The institutional meeting reflects the ongoing cooperation between public authorities and the different organisations operating in Menorca, while reaffirming the historical, strategic and maritime significance of the port of Maó as one of the leading naval hubs in the western Mediterranean.
