The Council of Mallorca has completed the stabilisation and protection works on the hillside located in the Fornalutx torrent valley, a project designed to prevent landslides and enhance safety in one of the municipality’s busiest areas.

The initiative represents an investment of €180,000 and concludes a project carried out over nearly five months to address long-standing concerns regarding slope stability.

The reinforced embankment is located beside the town’s main road, directly above a frequently used public car park and a bus stop, significantly improving protection for both pedestrians and motorists.

The project included a comprehensive cleaning of the slope, the removal of loose rocks and unstable material, vegetation clearance and the replacement of the existing double-twist wire mesh, which no longer provided sufficient protection against ground movement.

A new high-strength steel mesh has been installed and secured with reinforced passive steel anchors embedded into the rock to stabilise the hillside and prevent further displacement.

Drainage has also been upgraded through the installation of corrugated PVC pipes wrapped in filtering geotextile to improve water management during periods of heavy rainfall.

With these improvements, Mallorca strengthens the safety of a key transport corridor in Fornalutx while providing a long-term solution for an area historically affected by erosion and landslide risks.
