Son Llàtzer University Hospital has opened a new Outpatient Pharmacy Unit equipped with a robotic medication dispensing system designed to provide faster, safer and more efficient pharmaceutical care for more than 150 patients every day.

The project, fully financed through Insularity Funds with an investment of €500,000, introduces advanced technology that strengthens medication safety, streamlines clinical workflows and responds to the growing number of patients living with chronic and complex conditions requiring specialised hospital treatment.

The upgraded facilities include five pharmaceutical consultation rooms and a robotic storage area consisting of two automated units, one for room-temperature medicines and another for refrigerated products. Together, they can manage up to 12,000 medication packages.

The automated system loads, stores and delivers medicines directly to seven dispensing points through an integrated conveyor network. It also verifies the Data Matrix code, batch number and expiry date of every package, ensuring complete traceability throughout the dispensing process.

The robotic platform is fully integrated with the hospital’s outpatient prescribing and corporate management systems, allowing greater automation, improved operational efficiency and a significant reduction in the risk of dispensing errors.

With this new facility, Son Llàtzer University Hospital strengthens its ability to provide high-quality pharmaceutical care while improving treatment safety, operational efficiency and patient service through the integration of advanced healthcare technology.
