Spain has promoted the creation of the International Coalition for Children’s Rights and Protection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, an initiative unveiled during the first United Nations Global Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence Governance held in Geneva. The coalition brings together around twenty countries and international organisations with the shared objective of strengthening children’s protection against the challenges arising from the rapid development and deployment of AI technologies.
The initiative is supported by Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, the Czech Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Kenya, Luxembourg, Morocco, the Netherlands, the Republic of Korea and Spain, together with international organisations including UNICEF, UNESCO, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, the International Telecommunication Union, the United Nations Office for Digital and Emerging Technologies and the European Commission.
The coalition aims to strengthen cooperation between governments, international institutions, technology companies, civil society organisations, researchers and education professionals to ensure that Artificial Intelligence is developed and implemented in a way that safeguards children’s safety, healthy development and fundamental rights from the earliest stages of technological design.

Spain launches an international coalition to protect children’s rights in the age of Artificial Intelligence
The joint declaration recognises that AI is rapidly transforming the digital environments where children learn, communicate and interact. While these technologies create significant opportunities, they also increase risks linked to algorithmic manipulation, harmful online content, the creation of child sexual abuse material through synthetic media technologies and automated profiling of minors.
Coalition members have committed to promoting trustworthy, secure and human-centred Artificial Intelligence systems, encouraging international cooperation, exchanging best practices and strengthening evidence-based governance. They also support ensuring that children’s views are meaningfully considered when designing, deploying and regulating AI systems that directly affect their lives.
Spain has also reaffirmed its commitment to responsible AI governance by advancing measures to combat illegal AI-generated content, develop privacy-preserving age verification systems and promote new legislative initiatives aimed at enhancing the protection of minors across digital platforms and social media environments.
