Spain’s Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Administration is strengthening the country’s commitment to technological innovation and open-source solutions through a €1.92 million public investment aimed at expanding Penpot, the Spanish collaborative interface design and development platform created by Madrid-based technology company Kaleidos.
The investment is being carried out through the Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT) as part of a €6.9 million public-private funding round. The initiative seeks to support the growth of a technology developed in Spain while strengthening Spain and Europe’s strategic autonomy and digital sovereignty in a field currently characterised by significant dependence on foreign platforms.
During a visit to Kaleidos, Minister for Digital Transformation and Public Administration Óscar López highlighted the importance of supporting Spanish technological talent, open-source development and companies capable of competing internationally. Founded in Madrid in 2011, Kaleidos has accumulated 15 years of experience developing technological solutions for companies and institutions operating in different sectors and countries.

Spain boosts technological sovereignty with a €2 million investment in Penpot for web and app design
Penpot originated from an internal innovation initiative at Kaleidos and has evolved into an open-source platform designed for both designers and developers. Its approach brings interface design and development together within the same collaborative environment, encouraging cooperation between professional profiles while providing an alternative to proprietary technology platforms.
One of Penpot’s distinctive features is its ability to treat design as code, an increasingly relevant capability in the context of generative artificial intelligence. This architecture facilitates integration with different AI solutions and expands the platform’s potential for developing digital products, websites and applications.
The investment will enable Kaleidos to expand its commercial team, strengthen the development of its paid product and accelerate Penpot’s growth as a European open-source alternative for collaborative user-interface design. The Madrid-based company also has a young workforce in which women account for 60% of employees.
Funding is being provided through the Next Tech facility, supported by Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and the European Union’s Next Generation funds. The programme is designed to support innovative projects and improve access to financing for high-potential deep-tech companies.
Through this investment, Spain strengthens its position in the development of strategic home-grown technologies and supports a Madrid-created platform with the potential to compete internationally in the web, application and digital interface design and development market.
