Spain will take part as Guest of Honour at the 2026 São Paulo International Book Biennial, to be held in the Brazilian city from 4 to 13 September. Under the theme “Confluencias”, Spain’s programme will showcase the country’s literature, culture and publishing sector, strengthening cultural exchange between Spain and Brazil while promoting Spanish literary creation internationally.
The Spanish delegation will bring together 50 authors and feature a literary programme comprising thirty sessions. The programme will explore a wide range of contemporary literary trends, genres and perspectives, addressing themes including identities and borders, ecology, memory, history, writing about place, autobiographical literature and new forms of autofiction.

Spain Celebrates Its ‘Confluencias’ with Brazil as Guest of Honour at the 2026 São Paulo International Book Biennial
Linguistic diversity will be a central element of Spain’s participation, with literature and activities representing Spanish, Catalan, Basque and Galician. The programme will also encompass a broad range of literary forms, including fiction, poetry, essays, drama, comics and literature for children and young adults.
One of the main focal points of Spain’s presence will be a 500-square-metre pavilion at the Distrito Anhembi venue. Designed as a cultural and professional meeting place, it will include areas for book exhibitions, publishing-industry meetings, rights trading and literary and musical events. Inspired by the mosaics of artist Roberto Burle Marx, its flowing and interconnected design will symbolise the diversity of contemporary Spanish literature and its dialogue with Brazil.
Spain’s programme will extend beyond the Biennial itself. A number of participating authors will travel to different Instituto Cervantes venues across Brazil to take part in readings, conversations and workshops, bringing Spanish literature to wider audiences in other cities.
The cultural programme will include eight poetry evenings, a tribute to Caballero Bonald marking the centenary of his birth, exhibitions, concerts, comic masterclasses, literary and translation workshops, and activities aimed at children and young people. A professional programme will also bring together publishers, distributors, booksellers and representatives from across the book industry.
