The Ministry of Education and Universities has completed the allocation of teaching positions for the 2026-2027 academic year, achieving a 99% coverage rate for vacancies across schools in the Balearic Islands. The outcome allows educational centres to begin preparations for the new school year with almost all teaching staff assigned more than a month before classes start, marking one of the most comprehensive workforce planning processes carried out in recent years.

The process began in June with the allocation of provisional posts for permanent teachers without a final destination, staff assigned through service commissions and newly appointed trainee teachers following the 2026 competitive examinations. The initial offer exceeded 3,000 positions and, after staff movements, grew to more than 4,500 available posts, of which 1,654 were ultimately allocated.

The following stage focused on temporary teachers eligible to retain the positions they held during the previous academic year, resulting in the assignment of 341 posts. Ordinary and urgent recruitment procedures for temporary teaching candidates then filled 2,358 of the 2,417 vacancies initially offered, reaching a vacancy coverage rate of 98.4%. These appointments included 1,535 positions in Mallorca, 199 in Menorca, 551 in Ibiza and 73 in Formentera.

A key factor behind these results was the decision to move the teacher recruitment examinations from late June to May. The earlier timetable made it possible to obtain examination results sooner and integrate newly appointed trainee teachers into the allocation process much earlier than in previous years. In 2026, 1,082 candidates took part in the examinations and 295 secured permanent positions, improving participation and recruitment figures compared with the previous year.

The revised calendar also accelerated every subsequent stage, including provisional assignments, service commissions, trainee teacher placements, temporary teacher appointments and vacancy allocation. For the first time, the Ministry also opened the initial teacher substitution process during July for the upcoming academic year, allowing replacement staff to be appointed well ahead of the start of classes.

A total of 572 temporary replacement positions were offered through this procedure, with 448 successfully filled, representing 78.3% of the total. These posts correspond to temporary replacements for teachers who are absent due to medical leave, service commissions, unpaid leave or other administrative situations, ensuring uninterrupted educational provision throughout the school network.

Following the completion of the recruitment procedures, only 36 vacancies remain pending allocation across Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. These figures reflect the effectiveness of the new workforce planning strategy and demonstrate the significant progress made in preparing schools for the 2026-2027 academic year with stable and well-organised teaching teams.

The earlier allocation of teaching posts also provides direct benefits for schools and education professionals. School leadership teams can organise timetables, teaching staff and educational planning well in advance, while thousands of teachers have more time to arrange accommodation, travel and family commitments, particularly those assigned to work on an island other than their usual place of residence.
