Spain’s Ministry of Equality has condemned the alleged gender-based femicide of a 27-year-old woman in Cantabria, who reportedly lost her life on 31 July 2026.

According to the available information, the victim was allegedly killed by her 39-year-old partner. She was the mother of a minor child, and there had been no previous reports of gender-based violence filed against the alleged perpetrator.

With the confirmation of this case, the number of women killed by intimate partner or former partner violence in Spain has risen to 33 in 2026.

Since official records began in 2003, the total number of women killed by gender-based violence has reached 1,374.

Regarding children affected by these crimes, 23 minors have been left orphaned in Spain so far this year.

Equality condemns the gender-based femicide of a woman in Cantabria

Since 2013, the total number of children orphaned as a result of gender-based violence has reached 533.

The Ministry has expressed its deepest condolences and support to the victim’s family and loved ones while strongly condemning this new act of gender-based violence.

Authorities have reiterated the need to strengthen institutional cooperation and the commitment of society as a whole to prevent further femicides and improve the protection of victims.

The Ministry also reminds the public that specialised support, guidance and assistance services remain permanently available for victims and for anyone aware of a possible case of gender-based violence.

In any situation involving danger or suspected gender-based violence, citizens are encouraged to contact emergency services or law enforcement authorities immediately so that prompt action can be taken.
