Nearly 1,400 families across the Balearic Islands have applied for the “Cheque Canguro” financial aid programme designed to help cover the cost of before-school care services. The application period for this first stage closed on 31 July, confirming the strong demand for a measure aimed at improving work-life balance for families with children.

The scheme supports expenses related to childcare and supervision provided before the start of the school day and after lunchtime or the end of classes. Eligible services include those offered by educational centres, associated facilities, early childhood education centres and special education schools. Families may receive up to €1,000 per child, although most applications submitted request grants ranging between €300 and €500.

Nearly 1,400 Families Apply for the “Cheque Canguro” to Cover Before-School Care Costs in the Balearic Islands

The high level of participation highlights the growing need for initiatives that make it easier for parents and guardians to balance employment with family responsibilities. The response to this programme reinforces the importance of expanding financial support for childcare services throughout the school year and holiday periods.

Additional application periods will open in the coming months. From 10 September to 9 October, families will be able to apply for grants covering summer camps, Easter, Christmas and holiday programmes, as well as other childcare services during school breaks. A further application window, running from 1 to 31 October, will support the hiring of household employees dedicated to childcare.

All three “Cheque Canguro” programmes are compatible, allowing eligible households to combine different forms of support. Families may receive up to €1,000 per child for before-school care and holiday activities, together with grants of up to €4,000 to help finance the employment of childcare staff.

To qualify, applicants must prove residence in the Balearic Islands, demonstrate employment or an equivalent situation that justifies the need for work-life balance support, meet the established income limits and be up to date with tax and Social Security obligations. Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis once complete and valid applications have been submitted, until the available funding is exhausted.
