The Balearic Islands recorded a positive labour market performance in July, with unemployment falling by 2% compared with the same month last year while maintaining the highest proportion of permanent employment contracts in Spain. The latest figures highlight a stable labour market during the peak summer season, supported by historically low unemployment levels and continued growth in Social Security enrolment.

The number of registered unemployed people stood at 24,882, representing 504 fewer individuals than in July of the previous year. The strongest reduction in unemployment was recorded in Menorca, followed by Ibiza and Mallorca, while Formentera experienced an increase. By demographic groups, unemployment declined equally among women and men, with the most significant decreases recorded among people aged over 25 and EU foreign nationals. In contrast, unemployment rose slightly among those under 25 and more markedly among non-EU foreign nationals.

Unemployment falls by 2% in July as the Balearic Islands remain Spain’s leader in permanent employment contracts

The quality of employment remained one of the region’s main strengths. Permanent contracts accounted for 68.6% of all contracts signed during the month, well above the national average, allowing the Balearic Islands to retain the leading position among Spain’s autonomous communities. A total of 47,822 new contracts were signed in July, an increase of 12.5% compared with one year earlier, with growth recorded in Mallorca, Ibiza and Menorca, while Formentera registered a slight decline.

The labour market report also includes data on the extraordinary regularisation process for foreign nationals. Since the programme began, 587 people have registered with the regional employment service under this specific procedure, including 363 new registrations during July alone. Most of these job seekers are currently unemployed and have completed only primary education, creating additional challenges for employment services and public support programmes.

At the same time, Social Security enrolment reached 694,038 workers in July, representing annual growth of 3.5% and a stronger month-on-month increase than the national average. Self-employed workers also continued to expand, with 109,928 registered affiliates, reflecting both yearly and monthly growth and reinforcing the overall strength of the Balearic labour market.
