The Mallorca Council, through the Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS), has reviewed the first nine months of operation of the Comprehensive Home Care Service for children with intellectual disabilities and behavioural support needs (SAI-DIC). Since its launch in October 2025, the pioneering programme has provided specialised support to 82 children across Mallorca, delivering professional care directly in their homes while working closely with social, healthcare and educational services.
The free island-wide service offers 100 places and is delivered by multidisciplinary teams that provide personalised interventions tailored to the needs of each child and family. During its first nine months, the programme assisted 41 families in the Palma area, 20 in the Inca region and 21 in the Manacor area, extending its reach to both major population centres and numerous municipalities throughout the island.

The experience gained through the service has highlighted the need for additional specialised resources for the most complex situations. In response, IMAS is preparing a new complementary service scheduled to begin operating in 2027, providing temporary therapeutic residential stays with round-the-clock professional support for children and adolescents experiencing severe behavioural difficulties alongside intellectual disabilities.
The new resource will offer intensive intervention during particularly challenging periods while maintaining close collaboration with families and encouraging a safe return home once circumstances improve. This expansion represents the next stage in the development of Mallorca’s specialised care model, ensuring that each child receives the level of support most appropriate to their individual situation.
Through the continued development of services such as the SAI-DIC and the planned introduction of new specialist resources, the Mallorca Council reinforces its commitment to strengthening public support for children with intellectual disabilities and their families, expanding care options and adapting them to the evolving needs identified across the island.
