The Institut Mallorquí d’Afers Socials (IMAS) has awarded Artà Town Council the “Bones Pràctiques” distinction for basic community social services in recognition of “Open the Door to Good Treatment”, an initiative focused on preventing gender-based violence from childhood and adolescence through the involvement of schools, families, businesses and other sectors of the municipality.

The distinction recognises a community-based approach to prevention. Guillermo Sánchez, president of IMAS and councillor for Social Welfare at the Consell de Mallorca, highlighted the involvement of children and adolescents and the project’s ability to take its message to families, educational centres, local businesses and the wider community.

Sánchez also stressed the intention for the IMAS Good Practices bank to remain an active space where experiences can be shared and potentially inspire other municipalities in Mallorca.

This is the second Good Practices distinction awarded by IMAS. The first was presented last July to the Mancomunitat Pla de Mallorca for the campaign “There is no room for sexism”.

The Good Practices project, promoted by the IMAS Community Prevention and Territorial Support Service, aims to identify, recognise and disseminate quality initiatives developed by municipal social services in Mallorca while encouraging the exchange of experiences between professionals and different areas.

The mayor of Artà has also highlighted the project’s ability to make good treatment a shared responsibility while giving children and adolescents an active role in shaping the municipality they want.

Artà receives ‘Bones Pràctiques’ recognition for community project tackling gender-based violence. Prevention beginning in childhood

“Open the Door to Good Treatment” was developed in response to the need to prevent gender-based violence and encourage relationships based on respect and good treatment, involving different sectors of the Artà community.

Education plays a central role in the initiative, with prevention work beginning at an early age. Children and adolescents take part directly in the activities and help spread the message throughout the community via schools, families, businesses, radio and different municipal departments.

The initiative began in 2024 with a living exhibition built from contributions by pupils at schools in the municipality. They identified gestures, words and attitudes that make them feel well treated. The exhibition was subsequently opened to the wider public and became a large collective mural dedicated to good treatment.

In 2025, the project continued with “Open the Door to Good Treatment”, an initiative developed in schools using keys and key rings as symbols of good treatment, presented as the key that closes the door to mistreatment.

Students’ contributions were shared during a community gathering and later distributed among local businesses. Educational centres also received materials allowing them to continue working on prevention and good treatment in the classroom.

The IMAS Technical Assessment Committee for Social “Bones Pràctiques” considered a series of criteria when recognising the initiative, including its community nature, the involvement of different sectors, the continuity of its activities, its awareness-raising capacity and its preventive work with children and adolescents.

With this second distinction, IMAS continues to expand the “Bones Pràctiques” bank for Mallorca’s basic community social services, which brings together recognised initiatives and allows experiences developed in municipalities across the island to be shared and adapted in other areas.
