The Balearic Islands Symphony Orchestra will open its 2026-27 subscription season on Thursday, October 8, at 8 p.m. at the Auditorium de Palma. Pablo Mielgo will conduct the opening concert, featuring cellist Kian Soltani.
The programme brings together two major works from the symphonic repertoire: Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto and Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Also sprach Zarathustra.
Kian Soltani will take centre stage in the first half of the concert with Elgar’s Cello Concerto. Composed in 1919, the work is noted for its intimate, expressive and deeply lyrical character and has become one of the fundamental pieces in the repertoire for cello and orchestra.
The second half will focus on Richard Strauss and Also sprach Zarathustra. Premiered in 1896 and inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s philosophical work of the same name, the score is characterised by its orchestral richness and the wide range of musical resources required from the symphony orchestra.
