According to sources from the Ministry of Public Works, the International Association of Aids to Maritime Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA) has established World Aids to Maritime Navigation Day on 1 July each year. In this first edition, the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands and Puertos del Estado, with the collaboration of IALA, have organised a series of events in Palma de Mallorca.
The main events of this first edition of World Aids to Maritime Navigation Day will take place in Palma de Mallorca and will be structured in two sessions, one technical and the other institutional. Francis Zachariae, Secretary General of IALA, has confirmed his participation in the conference, which will be held under the slogan “Successful Voyages, Sustainable Planet” and will discuss the present and the new challenges of aid to maritime navigation to improve the safety of navigation and maritime traffic in an increasingly digital and changing environment, in order to contribute to the sustainability of the marine environment. In addition, it will be possible to visit the museum-exhibition of the Portopí lighthouse on 1 July between 17:00 and 21:00.
As a national coordination action, a large number of lighthouses and some sirens will be switched on simultaneously between 12:00 and 12:30 on 1 July.
In addition, each of the 28 Port Authorities, in the geographical area assigned to them in the field of aids to maritime navigation, will carry out activities with the aim of bringing this service closer to society, such as open days at some lighthouses, conferences, photography competitions and other initiatives that those interested may consult on the website of each Port Authority, where they will indicate how to participate in the activities, as well as through other means of dissemination.
