Ports Illes Balears has finished this Friday the works planned within the first part of phase 2 of the reform project of the Port of Fornells, in which the Government of the Balearic Islands, through the Department of Mobility and Housing, is investing more than 9 million euros.

In this second phase, which will be resumed once the tourist season is over, intensive work has been carried out to improve municipal drainage and to open up a new public space: a 1,500 square metre square, which residents and visitors alike will be able to use this summer. A public space that was previously occupied by car parks and other facilities has been reclaimed, improving accessibility in the area.

Other spaces have also been fitted out, such as the steps on one side of the square, which serve as a beach, with a provisional pavement that will allow this area to be used as a swimming area. The petrol station has also been installed and will be tested for use with fuel next week. The public beaching ramp has also been provisionally fitted out and will allow public use. This completes the planned work until the summer season. The resumption of the works will be agreed upon with the Es Mercadal Town Hall and the traders and restaurateurs in the area, with the aim of extending the tourist season as much as possible.

These days, only a few tasks related to the new port building are pending, which do not affect the public use area, such as painting the façades and interior works.

Towards autumn, Ports IB will finish the urbanisation work and will carry out an important part of the maritime tasks included in the reform project of the Port of Fornells, such as the repair of the breakwaters, the entrance dyke and the installation of the pontoons, among others.
