The Consell de Mallorca, through the Department of Transition, Tourism and Sports, has carried out 895 inspections in tourist establishments between 1 January and 31 May. At the beginning of the year, the island institution received the competencies of tourism management transferred from the Government of the Balearic Islands. Since then, it has carried out the tasks of tourism management, inspection and sanctioning.

During the first five months of the year, 895 inspections have been carried out in establishments all over Mallorca, of which 541 have been in tourist accommodation, 217 in tourist intermediaries and 120 in restaurants and entertainment establishments, among others. These inspections led to 175 infringement proceedings being opened. In terms of municipalities, most inspections were carried out in Palma (360 inspections), Alcúdia (50), Calvià (43), Pollença (41) and Llucmajor (39).

Of the total number of infringements, 112 were opened against tourist accommodation. During the inspections, 55 illegal tourist accommodations have been detected. The rest of the infringements opened against tourist accommodation are mostly related to commercialisation. The total number of infringement proceedings was completed with 53 for catering and entertainment establishments, and seven for tourist intermediaries.

The Catalan Minister for Transition, Tourism and Sport, Andreu Serra, stressed that “we want to act forcefully against illegal activity in tourist accommodation and in the fight against excessive tourism. We want to put an end to this scourge on the eve of the high season.

On the other hand, citizens can inform the island’s institution if they are aware of any illegal tourist offerings in Mallorca. The e-mail address inspeccioturisme@conselldemallorca.net has been set up for this purpose.

The Consell de Mallorca has received 2022 competencies in tourism planning and the Consortium of Tourist Accommodation Exchange (CBAT). On 1 January of this year, the Government of the Balearic Islands transferred the tourism management competencies to the island institution. The service, which depends on the Department of Transition, Tourism and Sports, consists of four basic aspects: tourism management, technical service, inspection service and sanctions service.

The priorities of the 2022 Inspection Plan for tourism management for this May and June have been the control of the application of the decree on excesses and the supervision of Holiday Tourism Stays (ETV) in Palma.

For its part, the Tourist Accommodation Exchange Consortium, which since 1 April this year has been under the Department of Transition, Tourism and Sports, is preparing a new call for proposals for the town councils of Mallorca, with a budget of €21 million. All these projects will include a plan of circularity measures.
