According to these data, from January to May this year, the average expenditure per visitor rises to 1,124 euros compared to the 939 euros spent in 2019, a record year, both in arrivals and in expenditure and profitability, resulting in greater profitability for the sector. At the same time, the trip duration is also increasing this year, from 5.9 days on average in the first five months of 2019, to 6.9 days this year.

A circumstance that has meant that total spending by international tourists in the first five months of the year has amounted to 3,641 million euros in total, 11.7% more than in 2019, when the figure was 3,263 million euros, and despite the fact that the number of arrivals is still below that of that year. In the month of May alone, total expenditure was 1,816 million, 12.7% more than the 1,611 million that closed the same month in 2019.

These figures highlight that tourists who now visit the Balearic Islands spend more at their destination, increase their average stay and favour greater profitability for the entire tourism sector.

According to Ibestat, tourists with Mallorca as their main destination spent 3,148.81 million euros from January to May, while those who came to Menorca spent 256.15 million, and those who came to Eivissa-Formentera spent 660.58 million. The variation with respect to the same accumulated months last year in Mallorca was 418.85%, in Menorca 556.63% and in Eivissa-Formentera 583.13%.

20.1% of tourist spending was devoted to paying the costs of a tourist package, 39.28% was dedicated to expenses related to accommodation or food, and the rest (40.62%) to transport, activities and other expenses.

The Councillor for Economic Model, Tourism and Employment, Iago Negueruela, expressed his satisfaction after learning the figures and stressed that the data show how “the Islands are managing not only to recover the tourism lost during the pandemic but also that the visitor who now arrives stays longer and spends more at the destination, bringing greater profitability to the sector”.

The minister highlighted the Islands’ progress towards “higher quality, environmentally friendly and more profitable tourism than before the pandemic”, which is also being reflected in employment figures. Along these lines, Negueruela highlighted the role that the new Tourism Sustainability and Circularity Law will play in the future, which will allow the Balearic Islands to continue to occupy the leading position it has always held.
