Specifically, 17 officers from Eivissa, 5 from Santa Eulària des Riu, 5 from Sant Antoni de Portmany and 2 from Sant Joan de Labritja have completed the training and will be on the streets of their municipalities this summer.
The Councillor of the Presidency, Public Function and Equality, Mercedes Garrido, congratulated the new agents and told them that “don’t forget that you are a point of reference for people’s proximity and that you are the first authority to which someone can turn when they have a problem. The challenge is enormous, but so is the satisfaction of seeing that there is a future and that the next generation of the force is coming on strong, eager and very well prepared”.
Garrido explained that this is the first decentralised course of many. In fact, the second is already underway, with 19 future officers from the 43rd promotion, of whom 5 are career civil servants and 14 are interim officers. In addition, at this time is also developing the course for the category of officer, which involves 4 applicants from the island of Ibiza and 2 of Formentera, which will mean that more local police vacancies remain free.
These decentralised courses are the result of an agreement the government signed with all the municipalities of Eivissa and the Consell Insular de Formentera, with a commitment to continuity, for which Garrido thanked the municipalities of Eivissa, Santa Eulària, Sant Antoni, Sant Josep, Sant Joan and the Consell Insular de Formentera for their involvement.
In all, the government is training 49 new local police officers in Eivissa, 30 of whom are graduating today. In all, the EBAP will have trained 300 new officers in the Balearic Islands in just two years.
“And this has just begun, because, thanks to the reform of the Local Police Coordination Law that we approved a few weeks ago, we will speed up the training and selection of new local police officers, we will hold the competitive examinations of the local councils that delegate this competence to us and then we will train them with the training course, all within a year”, explained the councillor.
The first decentralised training course began in December and lasted 800 hours of training, which is essential for accessing the local police category. To make it possible, the Govern has invested €130,000 and has provided technical staff through the IV police training headquarters of the EBAP, while the town councils involved have provided instructors and facilities to make this training possible.
The classes have been given by a team of more than 90 teachers, including speakers, collaborating teachers, and teachers in charge of online and practical monitors. The theoretical and sporting part has taken place in the Culture Building of the Santa Eulària Town Hall, the traffic practices have been carried out in different municipalities of the island, and the first aid training has been done in the facilities of the EBAP in Sa Coma and the shooting practices have been done in Calvià, on the island of Mallorca.
Finally, the Councillor of the Presidency, Public Function and Equality wished to make a special mention for the four women who, with the completion of this course, have been promoted to the category of local police. “I want to applaud your courage in taking this step forward because you are a reference for many girls and young women in our country. I hope that next year there will be many more”.
On behalf of the Government, the managing director of the Balearic School of Public Administration, María de Carmen Iglesias, also attended the event. Also in attendance on behalf of the local councils were the Mayor of Ibiza, Rafael Ruiz, the Mayor of Santa Eulària, Carmen Ferrer, the Mayor of Sant Josep, Ángel Luis Guerrero, the Mayor of Sant Joan, Antoni Marí Marí, and the Councillor for Governance of Sant Antoni, Neus Mateu.
