The government, through the Public Safety Institute of the Balearic Islands, today awarded medals with green and white badges, public congratulations and seals of quality to the local police forces of Eivissa and Formentera.

Specifically, the Cross of Police Merit with Green Badge was awarded to Mariano Torres, for more than 25 years as head of the Santa Gertrudis Children’s Transit Park, and to Óscar García, for his career as a police guardian in the municipality of Eivissa.

Also awarded the Cross of Police Merit with White Distinctive for 30 years of service with an outstanding career to Officer Felix Ramos, at the proposal of the Consell Insular de Formentera.

Public congratulations were awarded to officers Juan Carlos Sánchez and Javier Serra, from Sant Josep; Alberto Serrano, from Eivissa; José Parra, from Sant Antoni; Joan Tur, from Santa Eulària; and Marcos Marí, from Sant Joan. Finally, the municipalities of Eivissa, Sant Antoni, Sant Josep, Santa Eulària and Formentera received the seals of professional quality of the Tutor Police programme.

The councillor of the Presidency, Public Function and Equality, Mercedes Garrido, acknowledged the careers of all the award winners and assured that “what the government can do is to be at your side for everything you need, strengthening the corps within the framework of our competencies”.

In this regard, the councillor pointed out that since this summer the 30 officers trained in the first decentralised training course for Eivissa and Formentera have been in service, and very soon the 19 officers taking the second decentralised course will also be in service. “Bringing this training to the Pitiüses was a commitment of this government that we are fulfilling, of which we can already see the first fruits, and which we will continue to promote in the coming years,” said Garrido.

The councillor also explained that the government will have trained more than 500 new local police officers by the end of the term of office on the islands. A unified process of competitive examinations for local police officers has also been set in motion, with which the government will hold the competitive examinations for the municipalities that have delegated their powers to it. It will be done by islands. In the case of the Pitiüses, there will be three vacancies on the island of Eivissa and three on Formentera. The deadline for applications remains open until the 31st of this month, and the process will be resolved before the end of the year.

For his part, the councillor for Mobility and Housing, Josep Marí Ribas, remarked that “we recognise the work of a body characterised by its proximity, bearing in mind that we live in a safe community with a good level of social well-being thanks to the work of the local police, who monitor compliance with municipal regulations and protect the population”.

The mayor of Sant Josep, Ángel Luís Guerrero, said that “the distinctions are awarded to police officers who stand out for their track record, who are aware of the danger involved in wearing the uniform to protect the public and who have a great vocation for public service”.

Report of the 2021-2022 course Tutor Police and Road Education

The event took place at Sant Josep Town Hall and also served to present the report of the Tutor Police and Road Safety Education programmes for the 2021-2022 academic year, presented by the director of the Public Safety Institute of the Balearic Islands, Vicenç Martorell. As for the Tutor Police service, 14,909 students from 49 schools have participated with 10 agents in all municipalities of Ibiza and Formentera.

880 actions have been in the school environment, 658 outside the school environment and 59 have been in the field of new technologies.

Garrido stressed the government’s commitment to this service, which this year has been strengthened and expanded. In addition to the usual workshops on the prevention of bullying, drug use and safe mobility, this year there are three important new additions: training in equality and the prevention of gender violence, training in the prevention of discrimination and hate crimes such as LGTBI-phobia and xenophobia, and the “112 in schools” workshop, to introduce a culture of self-protection and risk prevention.

In relation to the Road Safety Education service, 11,284 students have taken part, with 16 agents and all the municipalities of the Pitiüses participating. New developments are also planned for this programme, with the launch of training in safe mobility for the elderly.
