The campaign, called the ‘Green Flag Movement’ recognises the efforts of the local hospitality industry and the activism of coastal municipalities with sustainability during the months of July, August and September. This year, 2,419 hospitality establishments from 22 different municipalities participated in the campaign. Between them, they collected 12,033 tonnes of glass containers, 28% more than last year.

The municipality that managed to recycle the most glass was Sant Antoni de Portmany. Sixty-nine per cent of its establishments participated and managed to recycle 617 tonnes of glass, 61% more than last year.

The councillor congratulated all the participants and especially Sant Antoni, as “this recognition shows that with the involvement of large waste generators in recycling, such as the hotel sector, we can move towards a circular economy”.

The event was also attended by Ecovidrio’s Balearic Islands manager, Roberto Fuentes, as well as representatives of the island councils, town councils and organisations participating in the campaign.

The recycling of the 12,033 tonnes collected this year is equivalent to avoiding the emission of 6,979 tonnes of CO2, similar to the emission per passenger of travelling 44,569 times between Madrid and Palma by plane.
